James Monroe was a president that set a goal for himself and didnt let it go. His goals were as simple as keeping the peace among our nation. He is known for the "Era of Good Feelings" which was briefly interrupted by the Panic of 1819, he kept his composure. In the process even established the Monroe Doctrine which still effects our soceity today. James Monroe deserves an A.

At this point the War of 1812 has passed and now the economy was flourishing. The nation could then focus on domestic issues. Which was just one of Monroe's goals. Monroe also successfully protected our land without battle. Thanks to the Monroe Doctrine and Rush-Bagot Agreement. The Monroe Doctrine stating that America will resist European intervention in our hemisphere. This doctrine is still heavily weighed in foreigh policy today. The Rush-Bagot Agreement which limited the number of vessels in American waters. Monroe was also successful wit his goal because of the Missourri Compromise. He kept peace among the states by equally dividing the states. The compromise states that the 36 degree 30 line of latitude was the divider between slave and free states. In general James Monroes goals were well accompished.

Monroe was very wise when it came to Congress and his Cabinet. Monroe rarely had problems with the cabinet, he also chose very wisely as to who joined his cabinet. He chose John Quincy Adams from the North, William H. Crawford from Georgia, and John C. Calhoun from the South. With this, there was constant representation from every region in the Unites States. When it comes to Congress, in general Monroe had a good relationship with Congress. For the most part they tended to agree on establishing new policies and adapting old ones. One exception; however, would be when Monroe wanted an amendment stating that the governemnt had the right to build, maintain, and operate transportation systems. In this case Congress thought that those powers were already implied. But all in all Monroe maintained a good relationship, even through the Panick of 1819.
It is clear that Monroe's most positive accomplishment was foreign affairs. It is impressive to say that the policies he established are still a huge part of our foreign affairs today. Not only was it the Monroe Doctrine that signifacantly helped the Unites States but also the Transcontinental Treaty. In this America gained the Oregon Territory from Spain and also Florida. With the land hungry Americans, he kept the citizens happy.
Although there is but one minor negative from monroe's presidency. The Panic of 1819, during this time there was painful economic depression. There was a growing unemployment rate and government revenues fell sharply, at this time Monroe's view was that these situation are natural for growing nations and work themselves out therefore he took little action to help the situation. Many did not like and felt that he was being irrisponsible.

When it comes to the future James Monroe had a great impact. When he was beig inaugurated into office he took a perswonable tour around the nation, this set off the "Era of Good Feelings" and made citizens feel closer to the man in office, this raised the bar for presidents to come. And of course his foreign affair doctrines are still in power today.

In conclusion, James Monroe kept his composure in times of struggle and strategically handled his affairs. He saw to it that his goals were reached, this was successfully accomplished. With his good impact on our country James Monroe deserved himself an A.
